GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan has slammed the DAP-led state government for lack of genuine efforts to revive the iconic Komtar building.
Its vice-chairman, Oh Tong Keong, told newsmen here that despite boasting new attractions such as The Top and Tech Dome, few people visit Komtar, largely due to the high price of admission.
"Just to give an example, (a ticket to visit the 420-foot) Skywalk in China costs RM89. The Skywalk at Komtar costs RM88 per entry, (but it is only) 17-feet long.
"It is very expensive here – no wonder there aren't many people coming.
“A family of four would have to spend almost RM800, including on parking expenses and food. That is half the (monthly living) expenses for the average Penangite," he said at a press conference at Komtar Walk today.
Oh added that if the Penang government is sincere in its goal of improving tourism in Penang, it should come up with a sustainable method to attract tourists, rather than just focus on acquiring wealth.
He also pointed out that a significant number of shops in Komtar have had to close down, adding that he believes a lack of business opportunities and the high rent could be reasons behind it.
In 2015, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng proposed that Komtar be converted into a hotel and serviced apartment.
"This is not a good idea at all. They should take initiatives to attract more traders and people to come, not build hotels," Oh added.
