GEORGE TOWN: DAP will hold an extraordinary meeting tomorrow afternoon to discuss the order by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for the party to hold a second re-election of its Central Executive Committee (CEC).
DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng said the party has yet to receive any letters or notice pertaining the announcement.
“We have yet to see the content of the said letter, we have to study it and discuss it in the meeting tomorrow before making any decisions.
“A press conference will be held after that to convey our decision,” he said today.
He said the RoS’ announcement as “weird” as the matter had been prolonged since 2013.
He said that a re-election was done back in 2012 but it took four years before RoS ordered the party to hold a second re-election.
Earlier today, RoS director-general Datuk Muhammad Razin Abdullah announced that DAP must hold a second re-election to appoint a new CEC for the party.
He said the results from the second re-election on September 23, 2013 is deemed unlawful.
Meanwhile, DAP national legal bureau secretary Gobind Singh Deo, who is also Puchong Member of Parliament said the party will only make a decision on the matter after the CEC members have met and discussed the issue.
“There are various options available but it’s best that we study the official letter of the RoS first.
“So I hope the RoS will write to us soon to convey its decision to us,” he said.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin criticised the RoS, saying that the agency should have been “more professional and fair in treating political parties, especially the opposition”.
“This is an old issue and it should not have been made big because obviously DAP understand their own constitution,” he said.
Asked on the impact the re-election could pose to DAP, Parti Amanah Negara's strategic communications director Khalid Samad said it would be “troublesome” but added that it will only be a minor problem to DAP.
“The worst case scenario is, DAP would have to hold the re-election. That’s it. They have years of experience in politics so I’m sure this issue would not give any impact on their political standing.
“I don’t see this as a problem. It would not cost DAP its support from the general public. They are mature enough to handle such situation,” he said.
