GEORGE TOWN: Two Nasi Kandar restaurants were among eight eateries ordered to close after cockroaches and rat droppings were found on their premises.
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) ordered the eateries to close for 14 days after inspections last night.
MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang said 52 eateries have been ordered to close since January due to hygiene and cleanliness issues.
"The city council is concerned about the cleanliness of food preparation in restaurants," she told the New Straits Times yesterday.
She said this was important to ensure the health of consumers and protect the reputation of the local food and beverage sector.
"The city council believes random inspections will not only ensure restaurant operators adhere to regulations and positively impact the food and beverage sector."
She said she hoped restaurant operators would strive to improve standards.
"The city council would like to emphasize that the closure of these premises is not intended to harm businesses but rather to ensure the safety and well-being of the local community.
Tan said the MBPP would intensify monitoring efforts to improve hygiene and food safety standards.
