KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan can achieve great things in the coming 14th General Election (GE14) by building on the success of its Teluk Intan by-election win.
Gerakan deputy president Datuk Dr Cheah Soon Hai said the victory was a good example of what Barisan Nasional can achieve if all component parties were working together.
Otherwise, the party could not have pulled off such success in the face of overwhelming odds, he said.
“Nothing is impossible if we stay united and do our best,” he said when addressing delegates at the Gerakan 46th National Delegates Conference (NDC) in Menara PGRM here today.
In GE13, the Barisan Nasional component party contested 12 parliamentary and 33 state seats.
Gerakan could only managed to win a sole parliamentary seat and three state seats.
But the party seems to be regaining its clout after its president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong defeated the DAP candidate in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election in 2014.
Mah, who had previously held the seat, defeated Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud by a razor-thin majority of 238, overturning a massive loss by 7,313 votes in 2013.
On another note, Cheah urged the people to give another chance for Gerakan to lead Penang.
He said Gerakan had a proven track record in running the state with 39 years of good governance.
As such, it is more qualified to lead the state compared to DAP, he said.
Cheah reminisced that Penang had done well under the leadership of former chief ministers Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu and Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon.
"For example, Tsu Koon managed to bring in Intel and the company is still operating in Penang to this day.
"This is one of our stellar records in the state." he said.
