KUALA LUMPUR: Umno members have unanimously voted for the party's president and deputy president posts to be uncontested in the next party elections.
Umno Permanent Chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin announced this after motions on the presidential policy speech proposed by an Umno Youth representative and seconded by a representative from Umno Perak was debated by state representatives including the Wanita and Puteri wings.
"Under Act 5 of the party constitution, the motion proposed by Umno Youth calls for all delegates, Umno members and supporters to strengthen ties of solidarity towards victory in the 14th General Election.
"However, an amendment to the proposal was made by the Youth wing, parallel to Article 20 of the constitution, amendment of para 5 which now includes: In the spirit of unity and in ensuring the concept is realised, it must be determined in this session that the positions of president held by Datuk Seri Najib Razak and deputy president held by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will not be contested in the next party polls," he said before adjourning the session.
The motion was voted unanimously by the delegates, thus accepted.
Umno Youth representative Datuk Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz, during the debate on the presidential policy speech, proposed an additional motion which is to not contest the top two party positions as a symbol of loyalty to the two institutions.
The motion was seconded by Umno Perak representative Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin.
