PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has decided that there will be no by-election for Paya Besar parliament seat in Pahang which fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Datuk Seri Abdul Manan Ismail.
EC chairman Tan Sri Hashim Abdullah said the commission had received official notification from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin on the vacant seat.
Hashim said under the Article (1) 54 of the Federal Constitution, there is no need for a by-election if the seat vacancy occurs within two-years before the dissolution of Parliament, unless the Dewan Rakyat Speaker expresses the need for a by-election.
“There is no notice from Dewan Rakyat Speaker to fill the seat.
“Therefore, the EC has decided that there is no need for by-election for Paya Besar parliament as provided under Article (1) 54 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement, today.
Manan, 69, died at Taman Melawati in Kuala Lumpur at 6.45pm on Monday.
Manan, who is also the Paya Besar Umno division chairman and Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) chairman, beat PKR candidate Murnie Hidayah Anuar and independent candidate Zahari Mamat with a majority of 7,715 votes during the 13th General Election.
Manan, who has been the Paya Besar member of parliament since 2008, also once served as the private secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
