KUALA LUMPUR: Independent candidate Larry Sng Wei Shien created an upset when he carried the Julau parliamentary seat in Sarawak in the 14th general Election.
In a straight fight, he defeated former deputy Foreign Minister and Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum for the rural Sarawak Parliamentary seat.
Sng, the former Sarawak Worker’s Party who held the seat as a BN representative between 1995 and 1999 defeated the four term Salang by a 1,941 majority.
Sng polled 10,105 votes, while Salang a four term incumbent for the seat received 8,174 votes.
Sng, 36, is the son of Sng Chee Hua, former deputy president of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak.
