(Update) PKR election results in Kedah annulled

SEBERANG JAYA: The outcome of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) elections which were held in Kedah has been annulled.

The party central election committee chairman Datuk Rashid Din said the re-elections would be held on another yet to be fixed date.

He said the decision to cancel the election results in the state was taken following protests from party members and other issues which had cropped up during the elections today.

PKR election committee secretary Ismail Yusop said the official results in Kedah has been cancelled as only six of 15 branches in the state managed to vote.

As for Penang, the results would be uploaded later on the party’s official website.

"It (Kedah poll) had to be called off because only one third of the divisions in Kedah were able to cast their votes.

"For Penang, all the divisions were able to take part in the voting process so the results will be considered as valid pending objections from members," he said at a Press conference at Safira Golf and Country Club in Seberang Jaya, Penang last night.

A fracas later broke out at the Press conference between two groups of PKR members, leaving at least one person injured.

Some of the members were unhappy with the election committee's decision to retain the results for Penang.

Shouting match were heard with members demanding that the results be annulled similar to Kedah.

Meanwhile, PKR Youth deputy chief Dr Afif Bahardin in a separate Press conference called on the election committee and PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to take responsibility for the chaos in both states.

"Representing the grassroots, I urge Saifuddin and the committee to take responsibility for what had happened."

He also urged all PKR members to highlight to the leadership the need to review the use of e-voting as it was inefficient and lack in transparency.

"We demand a system that is transparent because this one is open to manipulation. This is very disappointing and shameful." he said.
