Bersatu's Redzuan aims high, eyes VP post

KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chief Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof has revealed that he is eyeing one of the party’s three vice-presidential posts.

However, the Bersatu Supreme Council member said that he has no intention of contesting for any other higher position in the party.

“In the near-term, I don’t aspire to go higher than the VP post and I will only do this if there is enough support for me to do so.

“But, if you ask about my plan for the next five years, that’s a different story,” he told the New Straits Times when visiting Balai Berita at Jalan Riong here, on Thursday.

There are currently only two Bersatu vice-presidents, as Datuk Hamidah Osman quit the party on Sept 16, 2017, citing loss of confidence and weak leadership as reasons for her resignation.

The two remaining vice-presidents are Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman and Datuk Abdul Rashid Ansari.

Asked on why he will not contest for either the presidential or deputy presidential posts, Redzuan said that at the moment, he has enough on his plate.

“I have enough positions (in the party and government) as it is.

“Why should I chase (after new positions) when I am still in the midst of fulfilling the tasks I’m supposed to deliver?” said the Entrepreneur Development Minister.

On garnering support to contest for the vice-presidential post, the Alor Gajah Member of Parliament said he still has a lot of work to do in gaining the confidence of Bersatu members.

According to Redzuan, he plans on garnering support by displaying his capabilities in leading Melaka Bersatu and administering his newly-revived ministry.

“Support comes from the assessment of what I have done. There is no point trying to gain this support artificially if I am not good at what I do.

“So, I will walk the talk and let the party members see it for themselves,” he added.

On not having any position in Pakatan Harapan, Redzuan said that this is unimportant, reiterating that he has enough platforms through which to carry out his duties.

It was previously reported that Bersatu plans on holding its first-ever party elections by June next year.

This followed its extraordinary general meeting last month, which passed 79 of the 80 proposed amendments to the party's constitution, including postponing internal polls by up to 18 months from an undisclosed previous date.
