We are ever ready, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: As the country is undergoing political turmoil, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof is opting for the "wait and see" approach while bracing for any possibilities.

"In Parliament, we (operate) as usual and are prepared (for any eventualities).

"I'm unaware of what's happening. When things are clearer in the near future; when I have information on Parliament's operation, I would inform (all).

"Let's wait and see what will happen next. Please be patient," he told reporters after the swearing-in of Barisan Nasional's Datuk Mohamad Alamin as the new Kimanis Member of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Mohamad won the seat with a 2,029-vote majority against Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) after obtaining 12,706 votes in the parliamentary by-election on Jan 18.

With a hung government presently, questions were raised on whether the Lower House would resume as scheduled on March 9, or if Parliament would be dissolved, depending on the decision of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

The King, who had meetings with all members of Parliament, was reported to have given them two options; whether to nominate their candidate for prime minister or choose for snap elections.

Yesterday, interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a live telecast, proposed for a non-partisan government if he was given the opportunity to lead the federal administration.

He had resigned as the prime minister on Monday, effectively dissolving the Cabinet.
