KUALA LUMPUR: Having had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong this morning, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this afternoon said he presented legitimate documents to the King to prove that he had members of Parliament supporting him.
He said the King would now go through the documents over the next couple of days and subsequently would call party leaders to obtain their input.
The Port Dickson MP declared that he gained the support of more than 120 MPs to form the federal government.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Le Meridien Hotel, here.
Present with the PKR president were his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and party secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
At the press conference today, Anwar was asked to elaborate on the proof that he presented to the King.
"The documents presented to the King were statutory declarations (SD) and verification letters by political party leaders," he said.
Anwar was also asked if he had made any deals or compromises with any politicians currently implicated in criminal charges.
He elaborated that the government that he would form would be an inclusive one and that it would not reflect any political personal vengeance against anyone.
"I have made it adamantly clear that we are committed to institutional reform, to judicial independence and to the rule of law.
"There is no question about cutting deals with individuals, as alleged by some quarters ... it is completely irrelevant and irresponsible (the accusation)," he said.
When asked if the 120 MPs included former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he said the list would be released later.
"As I have said, this is an inclusive government; I am not in the position to deny anyone to participate, on the condition that they accept the policies and the parameters which are good governance and institutional reform," he reiterated.
Earlier today, Anwar was granted an audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara.
The one-hour audience concluded at about 11.30am, after which Anwar left the palace grounds without speaking to the press.
PKR communication director Fahmi Fadzil however alerted the press later that Anwar would make an "important announcement" at 2pm following his discussion with the King.
On Sept 23, Anwar revealed that he was granted audience with the King to present proof that he has a "strong, formidable and convincing majority" among members of Parliament to form the federal government.
The audience was postponed to a later date after the King went for treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
Meanwhile, it is learned that Umno Advisory Council chairman Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is expected to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong this afternoon.
However details of the meeting is not yet known or whether or not it is related to Anwar's announcement.
