Pas VP wants redelineation of electoral boundaries to have more Malay reps

KOTA BARU: Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has called for a redelineation of electoral boundaries in Malay-majority states to enable more Malay representatives in Parliament.

He said doing this could also lead to more areas being contested in the general election.

"The redelineation of electoral boundaries must be carried out in states like Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu and some parts of Kedah.

"Pas had raised this issue for a review and redelineation of electoral boundaries even when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed was the prime minister," he said.

Amar, who is also deputy Kelantan menteri besar, was speaking to reporters after receiving his second Covid-19 vaccine dose today at the Kompleks Kota Darul Naim.

He said Pas has suggested for additional seats in Muslim-majority states such as Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu and Kedah but the issue was not taken into consideration by the government at the time.

"Pas hopes that the suggestion can be considered as it will help balance the number of Malay seats in Parliament," he said.

Pas's Central Committee member Khairuddin Aman Razali, in a recent Facebook posting, said that the party is aiming for a two-third majority in the next general election with the help of its allies in order to redraw election boundaries in a way that will benefit Muslims.

He said the three Malay parties – Pas, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Umno – would have to work together to achieve this goal.

He added that there was also a need to increase the number of parliamentary seats in Malay-majority areas.
