KOTA BARU: Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Abdullah Ya'kub said he would declare the Melor seat vacant once he received Dr Md Yusnan Yusof's death certificate from the State Registration Department.
He said the document was needed before a declaration on the Pas state seat can be announced.
"Once receiving the certificate, I will inform the Election Commission (EC) on the Melor seat vacancy following the death of Dr Md Yusnan earlier today," he told NST.
Abdullah said the last time he announced the seat vacant was in 2015 following the death of former Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat.
It is understood that Article 46(5) of the Kelantan State Constitution states that a vacant seat has to be filled within 60 days from the date it is found to be vacant by the EC.
Dr Md Yusnan who was Pas assemblyman for Melor died of heart complications this morning. He was 53.
The funeral prayers for him would be held at Masjid Muhammadi Kota Bharu after Friday prayers followed by his burial at Pondok Haji Hassan in Ketereh.
The deputy committee chairman of Kelantan Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information and Regional Relations was Melor assemblyman for two terms.
In the 14th General Election, he defeated Umno's Azmi Ishak by a majority of 7,820 votes.
