KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition members of parliament have demanded that a special Parliamentary sitting be held immediately not later than Aug 9 to decide over the motion of confidence vote against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
They said it was unacceptable for a motion of confidence vote against the prime minister to be postponed until the Parliament sitting reconvenes in September.
"It is extremely unreasonable for a government, whose legitimacy and majority support among MPs is being disputed, to delay the process to determine the support in Parliament.
"We are also taking into consideration the situation in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic which continues to envelop the people, the continuous increase in the number of Covid-19 fatalities, the slow economic growth as well as questions surrounding the stability of the government, which must be resolved now.
"Therefore, we are of the view that the motion of confidence vote must be tabled, deliberated and decided upon immediately to resolve the issues surrounding the legitimacy of the prime minister," they said in the joint statement.
The joint statement was signed by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
Other signatories of the statement included Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is also the founder of Parti Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia (Muda), Selangau MP Baru Bian of Parti Sarawak Bersatu and Simpang Renggam MP Dr Maszlee Malik.
