Penang Umno to begin negotiations with PH on 15 Malay-majority seats [NSTTV]

BUKIT MERTAJAM: After the party's election, Penang Umno will start discussions on the state election with Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH), especially on 15 Malay-majority seats.

State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir said Umno would use the Barisan Nasional (BN) logo in the state election.

He said the number of seats Umno would contest in Penang depended on the negotiations.

"We have not had official discussion yet, but instructions have come for us to talk.

"We will use the BN logo. This is in the spirit of cooperation of the unity government.

"We will negotiate for seats in Malay-majority areas in the first round of talks with PKR and (Parti) Amanah (Negara).

"We will discuss other matters in the second round," he said after the Bukit Mertajam Umno division meeting at the Universiti Teknologi Mara Penang branch here today.

"If PH contests a seat, we will not contest it. And vice-versa.

"We will contest under a BN ticket and not a PH ticket because we are only working together to form the unity government at the national level to stabilise the economy and to prevent chaos in the country.

"If we enter three-cornered fights (in Malay-majority seats), we will all lose. PH will lose, Umno will lose. So we will work together in the state election, but not within the party."

Earlier, Musa defended his Bukit Mertajam Umno division chief post unopposed.

In Penang, only the Tasek Gelugor, Batu Kawan, Nibong Tebal and Balik Pulau Umno divisions will hold contests for the division chief's post.

Musa said nine Umno divisions in the state would not hold contests as their chiefs defended their posts unopposed.

In Tasek Gelugor, division chief Datuk Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor will face his deputy, Datuk Ibrahim Romli, and former Permatang Berangan assemblyman Omar Abd Hamid.

In Batu Kawan, division chief Datuk Mohd Noor Ahmad will face his deputy, Mohamad Hilme Ibrahim.

In Nibong Tebal, division chief Datuk Shafie Kassim, deputy chief Rashidi Zainol and former Sungai Bakap assemblyman Datuk Mohd Foad Mat Isa will face off.

In Balik Pulau, division chief Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah will face former Pulau Betong assemblyman Datuk Dr Muhammad Farid Saad.
