Pas to introduce religious and technocrat combo in Kelantan leadership

KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamist party Pas might change the Kelantan Menteri Besar if it is given the mandate to administer the state once again after the state poll.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the party would introduce a combination of religious and technocrat figures for the menteri besar and deputy menteri besar post in the state.

He added that the party, however, will retain its current caretaker menteri besar in Kedah and Terengganu if it wins the two states, subjected to the consent given by the respective rulers of the states.

"Pas has decided to retain the caretaker of Kedah and Terengganu Menteri Besar – Datuk Seri Sanusi Md Nor and Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar – if we win the polls in the respective states.

"Meanwhile, we will introduce a change in the current combination of the menteri besar and deputy menteri besar in Kelantan into a leadership combo comprising a religious scholar and a technocrat.

"Such a change, however, is subject to the people's mandate and the Sultan of Kelantan's approval," he said in a statement.

Takiyuddin said the decision was made following a daily committee meeting held on Aug 10, which Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang chaired.

Meanwhile, the Kelantan Menteri Besar was a position held by Datuk Ahmad Yaakob since 2013, replacing Pas spiritual leader Tan Sri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Ahmad had also previously hinted that he was ready to let go of the post.
