Centenarian votes for the 15th time

DUNGUN: Age is just a number for Terengganu's oldest woman, Munah Adam, when it comes to voting.

The woman from Kampung Pasir Raja, Hulu Dungun, who is said to be 108, cast her ballot for the 15th time in the Terengganu election at SK Pasir Raja, about 11am, today.

What that means is that Munah has voted in every single state election Terengganu has ever seen.

Her 69-year-old son, Adnan Apil, said Munah had immediately agreed to vote as soon as she was told that today was election day in Terengganu.

"She was very excited when we asked her if she wanted to vote and told me to immediately take her to the voting centre. Ibu told me this is the 15th time she would be voting," he said.

Adnan said Munah has four children, 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, is in the pink of health and up to the end of last year, was still able to walk, adding that she also has good eyesight.

"In the 15th General Election in November, she was still able to walk at the voting centre and mark her own ballot paper.

"However, she fell from her bed in December and since then she hasn't been able to walk unassisted. However, her eyesight is still very good and she can talk and even joke, so she is still very sharp," he said.

Asked the secret to her long life, Adnan said his mother was like any other person, but liked particularly to eat rice with ulam.

"From young until now, she has also never missed her daily prayers and is well-versed with the Quran," he said.

Adnan, however, said Munah's MyKad lists her as being 98 years old, perhaps because her birth was registered late.

"I believe my mother to be more than 108 years old, but her birth was registered very late because her parents were unable to go to the police station for the purpose (as was the practice then)," he said.
