Ahmad Fadhli: PN's 'Selamatkan Malaysia' rally on Malaysia Day will not impact govt's position

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional's (PN) "Selamatkan Malaysia" rally scheduled for Malaysia Day would not affect the government's position, the August House heard today.

Pasir Mas member of parliament Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the rally was only aimed to ensure a proper explanation towards Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's discharge by the Attorney-General (AG).

Following this, Ahmad Fadhli also requested the government to allow the rally to be carried out smoothly.

"Not many of the youths will be participating, the most at 10,000 people which is not sufficient to 'shake' (goncang) the government.

"As the MPs, we are the lawmakers and we will not be in a confrontation with the police or authorities. We are only asking that the government allow us to carry out the rally smoothly.

"We will follow the laws but ease our affairs as I know that many (of the MPs) in the government are also not comfortable with the issue (Zahid's discharge)," he said during his debate session of the 12th Malaysian Plan (12MP) mid-term review in Dewan Rakyat, today.

Ahmad Fadhli, who is PN Youth chief also confirmed that he had been summoned by the police to give a statement regarding the rally.

"I have been summoned by the police and there was no issue to give a statement. It is also not an issue if we need to change the location, but we only want to express our view on the issue.

"However, I would also like to correct the statement made saying that a rally must be held with a permit. Don't we only need to inform the police and no longer need a permit?"

Previously, it was reported that PN would lead a Malaysia Day protest against Zahid's discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in his corruption case.

Following this, the police announced stern action would be taken against the organiser and participants of the rally.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said that so far, police had yet to receive any permit from the organiser to hold the protest in front of the Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.

He said under the Peaceful Assembly Act 201, it compels those organising gatherings or assemblies to hand in a notice five days before the event.
