Ex-Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San appointed Selangor speaker

SHAH ALAM: Former Banting assemblyman, Lau Weng San, has been appointed as the new Selangor state assembly speaker.

His name was proposed by Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim, who is also a former speaker, and supported by Banting assemblyman, V. Papparaidu.

At the meeting, Sijangkang assemblyman Datuk Dr Yunus Hairi also proposed Selangor PAS deputy commissioner III, Dr Mohd Fuad Mohd Salleh, as Speaker from Perikatan Nasional (PN), which was supported by Selat Klang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.

The Selangor state assembly secretary, J. Gayathri, then informed that it was difficult to vote as there were two names of Speaker candidates submitted.

In the secret voting process, Lau received 34 votes from the council, while Mohd Fuad received 22 votes.

For the position of deputy speaker, Port Klang assemblyman, Azmizam Zaman Huri proposed Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin as Deputy Speaker, supported by Teratai assemblyman, Yew Jia Haur.

PN, through Sabak assemblyman Sallehein Mukhyi, proposed Sungai Ramal assemblyman Mohd Shafie Ngah, who was supported by Gombak Setia assemblyman Muhammad Hilman Idham.

After completing the secret ballot process, Mohd Kamri received 34 votes, while Mohd Shafie received 22 votes.

At the meeting, a total of 56 assemblymen, including 22 from PN, took their oath.

The swearing-in ceremony began with Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

It was followed by 10 exco members of the Selangor government, namely Kinrara assemblyman, Ng Sze Han; Izham Hashim (Pandan Indah); Borhan Aman Shah (Tanjong Sepat); Ng Sue Lim (Sekinchan); Datuk Rizam Ismail (Sungai Air Tawar); Najwan Halimi (Kota Anggerik); Jamaliah Jamaluddin (Bandar Utama); V. Papparaidu (Banting); Dr Fahmi Ngah (Seri Setia) and Anfal Saari (Taman Templer).

On Aug 12, Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) formed the Selangor state government after winning 34 out of 56 state assembly seats, while PN won 22 seats.
