ALOR STAR: Pakatan Harapan's efforts to break Perikatan Nasional's (PN) "green wave" would be boosted by a victory in the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election in Penang, says an Amanah leader.
The party's deputy president Senator Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said he believes the unity coalition's victory in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election will boost its chances of wresting Sungai Bakap from PN.
The by-election was triggered by the death of its incumbent assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff of Pas on May 24. The date for the by-election has not been set.
"The 'green wave' is waning," Mujahid told a press conference yesterday, referring to the term coined by politicians and observers to describe PN's political rise in the 15th general election.
"If we look at the previous by-elections, we have managed to break PN's wave," he said, alluding to the unity coalition's victories in the Pulai, Simpang Jeram, Pelangai and Kuala Kubu Baharu by-elections.
"With those victories, we hope to continue breaking down the PN's wave in Sungai Bakap."
Mujahid, the former Parit Buntar MP said he was optimistic about the unity coalition's chances in Sungai Bakap as it was formerly held by PH.
Before last August's Penang state election, PKR held the Sungai Bakap seat for three consecutive terms.
He said the unity government's track performance would help sway voters to back PH.
Mujahid said Amanah would help explain to voters what the unity coalition has achieved in Sungai Bakap and Penang as a whole.
"We will (also) be focusing on countering our opponent's campaign."
Earlier, Mujahid held an engagement session with Kedah Amanah members.
