NIBONG TEBAL: The unity pact leadership at the national level will meet closer to nomination day to finalise discussions on several matters, including the candidate for the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.
The Election Commission (EC) fixed July 6 for the Sungai Bakap by-election, triggered following the death of its assemblyman, Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24.
EC deputy chairman Professor Azmi Sharom said the nomination of candidates for the by-election would be held on June 22 , while early voting is set for July 2.
"We will strive to win back the Sungai Bakap state seat. Insya Allah," Unity pact national leadership spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil told newsmen during a day-long working trip to Penang today.
Fahmi said discussions had been held at the branch, division and state level, and was progressing smoothly.
On Monday, the Penang unity pact had agreed to field a candidate from PKR to contest the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who heads the Penang unity pact, said the decision was unanimously agreed by all parties in the unity pact.
PKR had submitted the names of five potential candidates to the top leadership for a decision.
Elaborating on the candidates' list, Fahmi said surely the office of the president (PKR) would look into the matter comprehensively in line with the specific criteria, including the possibility of a local candidate being fielded.
"We will know the candidate when the time comes.
"We will leave it to the leadership to make the final decision," he added.
In the 2023 state polls, Zamri won the Sungi Bakap state seat against PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rus with a 1,563 vote-majority.
