SAPP maintains status quo, tells PN not to contest in Sabah polls

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is maintaining its political stance.

Its president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, said the party, which is part of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) at the state level and Perikatan Nasional (PN) at the federal level, did not have to make any changes.

"We are (part of) GRS. GRS was formed by PN. We have not changed our stance. We don't have to choose.

"(The formation of) GRS was announced in Sabah by PN chairman and the (then) prime minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin)," he told the media after the SAPP Likas annual general meeting (AGM) here.

In the state election in September 2020, Muhyiddin, who came to Tuaran, announced that the cooperation between PN, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) in the state would be known as GRS.

However, in the 2022 parliamentary election, which saw Pakatan Harapan leading the government, many lawmakers in Sabah, including incumbent Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, left PN.

Nominated assemblyman Yong said he had told PN not to contest in Sabah in the state election.

"I (have ) told GRS that in the (upcoming) state election, SAPP will contest under GRS."

Earlier, the former chief minister highlighted the national traction on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the recognition of Sept 16 as Malaysia Day and Aug 31 as Sabah Day as significant milestones for SAPP.

"For many years, nobody thought it was possible, but now it has become a reality.

"In the same way that we have succeeded with Sabah Day and MA63, I believe we will get it right on Labuan. In due time, Labuan will be part of Sabah again."
