Every party has the right to make demands for candidate selections, says Mahfuz

ALOR STAR: Kedah Pakatan Harapan (PH) has no issue with the Alor Star Umno division passing a resolution demanding Barisan Nasional (BN) contest the Kedah capital's parliamentary seat and one state seat in the constituency in the 16th General Election (GE16).

State PH chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar said every party has the right to make resolutions and demands in the negotiation to contest for parliamentary or state seats in elections.

"Each party will certainly have an interest in certain areas, for those seats that were either won or lost... all this will be negotiated.

"This is a common matter that will be brought up by all parties and it will be considered in negotiations. Everyone will have discussions and it will be negotiated," he said when contacted today.

Mahfuz, who is also Amanah vice-president, said the resolution made by the Umno division is not final and will be considered in negotiations among the component parties of the unity government.

"We will determine the formats and methods for the negotiations on the distribution of candidates for parliamentary and state seats," he added.

He also assured that Kedah PH does not view the demands of the Umno division as a potential cause of conflict between PH and BN in Kedah.

"There is no problem for PH, we do not see their demand (Alor Star Umno division) as causing any conflict among unity government component parties. It is not an issue," he added.

Yesterday, it was reported that Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said there was a justification for reviewing seat allocations following the results of the 15th state election.

He said the party has the right to contest seats that PH lost to PN in the next general election.

Mahdzir was commenting on the resolution passed by the Alor Star Umno division demanding that BN contest the Kedah capital's parliamentary seat and one state seat in the constituency in GE16.
