GUA MUSANG: Umno is ready for the possibility of another by-election in Johor following the death of Mahkota assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain yesterday.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, said the party would wait for the Election Commission (EC)'s announcement.
"I visited her (Sharifah) before she passed away yesterday. On behalf of Umno and Barisan Nasional, we would like to express our condolences to her family.
"InsyaAllah, we will wait for EC's announcement after they hold a meeting on the matter.
"Umno is ready to face another by-election (in Johor) for the Mahkota state seat."
The deputy prime minister told a press conference this after accompanying BN candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani at the nomination centre in Dewan Perdana here today.
Sharifah, 63, died due to internal bleeding at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, Johor.
The two-term assemblyman was brought to the hospital by her family on Tuesday night.
She served as Penawar assemblyman from May 2018 to March 2022 before being elected as Mahkota representative on March 12, 2022.
She was also Kluang Umno Women's chief.
