KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno leader has questioned if the party has truly reformed, saying the Barisan Nasional lynchpin must address its flaws to be strong.
"We have talked about reforming Umno many times whenever we gather, but have we succeeded in achieving it?," said Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi.
"Have we truly reformed, or is it merely an empty promise?," Nurul Amal said her speech at the wing's delegates' meeting here.
She said although Umno survived its "sinking phase" and found ways to revive itself, its "ship" still had flaws that needed to be fixed.
"Therefore, we need to return to the party's original struggles, and the struggle we carry in this contemporary (political) landscape must align with the party's identity," she said.
Nurul Amal said while the party has pledged to address its flaws, it would be meaningless if Umno continues to be "lulled" by "dreams".
She said that Umno needs a new strategy and that its members must understand the party's identity.
Present at the meeting were Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
She added that the party must be open to analyse its weaknesses, rather than finding fault with its rival and other parties.
She also said if the party recognised its shortcomings and improved its weaknesses, Umno could rise and restore its glory.
"Umno (members) must open its mind and heart to study and analyse the party's weaknesses, instead of finding fault with other parties.
"We must know ourselves first (the weakness) and only then can we understand our shortcomings to improve the important aspects of the party.
"If there are any arising issues, be wise and resolve internal matters in our own way."
