Mahkota is nobody's stronghold, says Takiyuddin

KOTA BARU: Perikatan Nasional (PN) does not consider the Mahkota state assembly as any party's stronghold.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said any party contesting the seat had a chance of winning.

"In politics, anything can happen, even if the situation on paper seems to favour a certain party.

"The Mahkota seat, in my opinion, is not a stronghold for any party as anything is possible.

"Voter preferences are unknown and can only be proven during the election," he said after the Kota Bharu Half Marathon (KBHM) prize presentation ceremony today.

He added that Pas, together with other PN component parties, would actively campaign to support their candidate.

"The candidate will be announced later, and all of us under PN will unite to ensure our candidate's victory," he said.

The Election Commission had set Sept 28 for the Mahkota by-election, with nomination day on Sept 14 and early voting on Sept 24.

The by-election follows the death of its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 64, on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah had been admitted to Hospital Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom in Kluang after suffering from internal bleeding.

She won the Mahkota seat with a 5,166-vote majority in the March 2022 state election and had served as Kluang Umno Women's Chief since 1993.
