Azmin skips Bersatu's top leadership race, focuses on Gombak division

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali has confirmed he will not contest for any top leadership positions in the upcoming party elections next month.

Azmin told Utusan Malaysia that he would only be competing at the divisional level in Gombak but declined to provide further details.

Last Saturday marked the start of the divisional nomination process nationwide, with Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin submitting his nomination for the deputy president post, a position currently held by Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Hamzah previously served as Bersatu's secretary-general from 2020 to 2023.

It was reported that Ahmad Faizal will run for the vice-president position, potentially paving the way for Hamzah to take over as deputy president.

In July, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional chairman, said he was given a mandate by the Supreme Council (MPT) to ensure that the party election in October would not cause internal friction.

Muhyiddin also revealed that Azmin was offered the role of secretary-general due to his strong performance as the Selangor opposition leader.

The party's election season commenced with divisional nominations across the country, while elections for Bersatu's various wings – Srikandi, Armada, Srikandi Muda, and Bersatu Pusat – were held last Saturday.

The divisional conferences are scheduled to take place between Oct 12 and 26.
