JOHOR BARU: Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong announced his intention to step down as Johor DAP chairman, nominating his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, as successor.
The Iskandar Puteri member of parliament said he believed the time was right for fresh leadership.
"I have faced numerous challenges over the past 10 years, including general elections and state elections," Liew said at the Johor DAP annual convention in Taman Ekoflora today.
Liew said he would still contest a seat on the state DAP committee.
"If re-elected to the committee, I will nominate Nie Ching as the next Johor DAP chairman."
The event was attended by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Teo and Johor DAP secretary Andrew Chen.
Johor DAP holds 10 seats in the state assembly and five parliamentary seats: Iskandar Puteri, Kulai, Kluang, Bakri and Labis.
Teo is the national DAP publicity secretary and chairman of the national DAP women's wing.
Liew urged party members to support her candidacy.
"Unity is our strength, and it is the key to our victories. I am confident that Nie Ching will lead our party to a brighter and stronger future."
Liew expressed his gratitude to the party and its members for their support during his tenure.
