NST Leader: Gaza conflict spreads

The world was worried that the carnage committed by the Zionists against the Palestinians in Palestine may provoke reaction against Israel and its Western allies elsewhere.

It was right. The ripples have begun in the Red Sea with Danish firm Maersk and German transport company Hapag-Lloyd, two of the world's leading shipping giants, pausing their traffic there on Friday, after their vessels came under drone and missile attacks by Yemen-based Houthis, according to news agency AFP.

The Houthis took to social media earlier in the month saying the attacks on the ships were in retaliation for the Israeli oppression of the Palestinians.

Western warships have increased their presence there and are quoted by the media to have shot down a number of drones targeting commercial vessels heading for Israel.

The United States is reported to be working with the international community "to deal with this threat", the news agency quoted its national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, as saying.

In response, the Houthis issued a warning to Israel, the US and other Western allies of the Zionist regime on Saturday against any hostile moves against Yemen. Where will all this end is anyone's guess.

For sure, the US and maybe even the European Union, that are blind to the atrocities of the apartheid Zionist regime against the Palestinians, will start another war in Yemen.

We may not be able to tell where all this will end, but we can with the certainty of what is humanly possible say how it will end. It will create yet another Afghan-istan, Iraq and Syria.

So long as the West, especially the US, refuses to do anything about what Human Rights Watch calls the "systematic impunity" of the Israelis for the killing of Palestinian children and women, there is every chance for the Gaza conflict to spread.

Before that, the pause in Red Sea traffic will cause major pains for the global economy. An attack on Yemen will only make it worse. It will be Ukraine all over again: disruption in the supply chain and soaring costs of goods as rerouting and insurance become more expensive, which will only make the cost-of-living crisis worse.

The West is making a mistake. Yemen isn't the problem. Neither is Iran. The problem begins and ends with Israel.

Granted, the West on extremely rare occasions appears to act tough, like the US and the United Kingdom did recently when it imposed sanctions on violent illegal Israeli settlers. But the true cause of savage violence is in Tel Aviv.

As pointed out by The Guardian in its editorial recently, the real issue is "an extremist government that not only enables but encourages extremism". A rare but welcome admission from an Israel-can-do-no-wrong newspaper. Yet the US is defending everything this extremist Zionist regime is doing.

What is worse, it is arming the extremist regime with billions of dollars worth of weapons every year. Most of them are being used against Palestinian women and children.

Since Oct 7, Israel has killed close to 20,000 of them. Western weapons only fund Israeli impunity. Peace will not come to the Middle East until two things happen.

One, the international community must guarantee the Palestinians an independent Palestine with 1967 borders.

Two, Benjamin Netanyahu and members of his cabinet must be held accountable for their war crimes.
