Remain vigilant despite relaxation

LETTERS: Komuniti Harapan Malaysia (KHM) fully supports the government's bold move to substantially remove MCO after achieving success in reducing the number of Covid-19 cases.

Since our peak on April 3 with 217 cases, the figures in the last 15 days were mostly in two-digits.

However, despite the reduction in cases, we must not allow complacency to set in and jeopardise all the hard work everyone had done to combat Covid-19 for the last two months.

We must remain vigilant against this invisible enemy. Safe social distancing must be maintained. Wearing mask, using hand sanitisers, constant hand washing, not travelling in groups and constant disinfection of public places must be practised.

We are also concerned with the large numbers of MCO violators. According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, as of April 29, 22,432 people had been arrested for MCO violations.

While some have paid the fines and released, substantial number of them are in lock-up. We urge the government to put those violators to good use by giving them the option to do community service.

They should be ordered to help out with enforcing social distancing in public places like the LRT and MRT stations, markets, government departments, banks and shopping malls.

One important point the World Health Organisation has made is that the coronavirus will be with us for a very long time.

Unless a vaccine is found, there is no cure for it. This needs collective action and only then can we minimise the infection rate.
