RTD branch head's absence caused a great inconvenience

LETTERS: Dealing with government departments or agencies can be a hassle, even though it should be easy.

This was the case for me during a recent visit to a Road Transport Department (RTD) office.

I needed to search for the particulars of a vehicle that was involved in an accident.

After waiting for my turn for almost an hour, I was told by the staff member there that only the head of the RTD branch could approve the search for the particulars requested.

As the head of the branch was not at his office, I enquired if there was another person who could sign on his behalf. A staff member said he would check.

After another wait, I was told to come back in the afternoon when the head would be present.

The staff member said: "If you wait, we do not know when the head of the branch will return."

It is ridiculous for me to come back another day just to get the signature of the RTD branch head.

The head knows that only he can sign a request to allow it to proceed. So he should be in the office and not go missing.

Or there should be another person who can sign in his absence.

His absence caused me a lot of inconvenience.
