RTD to replace Awas cameras in phases

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is currently conducting the phased replacement of its Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras at gazetted locations.

In a statement, its director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the replacement aligned with the improvements to the existing Awas camera system, which incorporates the latest technology through the Automated Number Plate Recognition to ensure better operation.

"The replacement involves the Redflex model cameras, which need to be changed due to major faults and the lack of support from the manufacturer," he said.

Aedy also said the operation of AwAS cameras aimed to enforce speed limit violations and traffic signal non-compliance, as stipulated under the Road Transport Act 1987, in line with efforts to reduce road accidents and fatality statistics.

As such, he said, the RTD called for the cooperation of all road users to adhere to the existing laws and exercise tolerance towards other road users, prioritising the safety of themselves and their families while on the road.

"This department remains committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of road users, striving to maintain the highest standards," he added.
