LETTERS: Littering not only harms the environment but also damages the reputation of the country, as littered public spaces reflect poorly on both local residents and tourists alike.
Therefore, Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) fully supports the Ministry of Housing and Local Government's proposal to amend the 1976 Local Government Act, which seeks to impose community service on repeat litterbug offenders.
Traditional fines have not deterred offenders, making it clear that a more impactful solution is needed.
Thus, the move as announced by the Minister, Nga Kor Ming, targeting serial litterbugs by making them clean public spaces such as drains and toilets, is a proactive approach.
Such a measure is long overdue and necessary for ensuring that persistent offenders face consequences for their irresponsible actions. In addition, it also creates awareness and encourages a culture of cleanliness and responsibility.
Community service, as proposed, is both punitive and educational, encouraging personal responsibility and public accountability.
Singapore, Norway and Sweden have successfully implemented similar measures, reducing littering incidents by making the consequences more visible and hands-on.
As part of our broader sustainability initiative, MPMA organises campaigns that promote responsible consumer behaviour, such as proper plastics disposal and recycling.
This ties in with the government's anti-littering campaigns, which MPMA supports by raising awareness about the detrimental effects of littering on the environment.
Since 2015, MPMA had been organising the "Don't Be a Litterbug" campaign to address the need for individual responsibility in waste disposal.
'Don't Be a Litterbug' has been implemented at national festivals and public events such as, Thaipusam and Chingay celebrations, marathons, Ramadan bazaars and night markets.
Throughout the campaign, the public were educated on how to correctly separate waste into recyclables and non-recyclables to encourage the adoption of waste separation at source (SAS) among Malaysian households.
This effort is crucial, because only through the effective implementation of SAS can the value of recyclables, including plastics, be realised.
By ensuring that recyclable materials are correctly sorted, they can be directed to recycling facilities, where they are transformed into new products made from recycled materials.
This not only reduces waste but also promotes the circular economy.
MPMA will continue to champion and organise 'Don't Be a Litterbug' campaigns nationwide to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of littering and encourage collective action to keep Malaysia clean and free from waste pollution.
By working together, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
