KUALA LUMPUR: World No 2 Lee Chong Wei is excited and eager to begin the year with a bang at the Malaysia Masters in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.
The second seed, who was unsure whether to play in the tournament, will open against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto.
“After consulting my coach, I thought that it would be best if I took part in this tournament,” he said.
“The world’s best players are here, so it will be a great platform for me to regain my competitive edge.
“I am not setting a target, but I promise that I will do my best.”
Chong Wei and reigning world champion Victor Axelsen of Denmark are expected to meet in the final on Sunday.
Others in the fray are China’s Chen Long and Lin Dan along with South Korea’s Son Wan Ho.
For the record, Chong Wei has won the tournament five times, the last being the 2016 edition in Penang.
