Jing Yi does not want a headache

KUALA LUMPUR: National women’s doubles player, Tee Jing Yi does not want to think too much about her place in the Uber Cup squad, instead she wants to focus on the upcoming championships first including the Finland Open which begins this Thursday (05.04).

According to the former national singles player, her immediate focus will be on the upcoming championships that she and her partner Soong Fie Cho will be competing in, despite their positive showing during the Uber Cup qualifiers in February.

"I am not thinking too much about the Uber Cup. I need to focus and give my very best in the championships that are just around the corner first,” she said when contacted earlier today (Tuesday).

Jing Yi paired up with Soong Fie Cho at the Orleans Open last week after partnering Vivian Hoo during the Asia Team Championships which was the qualifying round for the Uber Cup, following Woon Khe Wei’s injury.

However, at the Orleans Masters, Jing Yi-Fie Cho crashed out in the second round after succumbing to Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva.

"This time round at the Finland Open I will also be in action in mixed doubles with Shia Chun Kang and we will need to go through the qualifying round first.

"This is something new for me to play mixed doubles at international level. However my aim is to just do my best and see how far we can go,” said the 27-year-old Penang born shuttler.

This differs when it comes to women’s doubles where Jing Yi has set a target of making the final together with Fie Cho.

In mixed doubles competition, Chung Kang-Jing Yi will face Finnish pair, Jere Overmark-Inalotta Suutarinen in their first qualifying match.

Bagi saingan beregu wanita pula Jing Yi-Fie Cho diletakkan sebagai pilihan kedua dan akan mendapat bye di pusingan pertama.

Together with Fie Cho for women’s doubles, they are second seeds and therefore received a bye in the first round, with their opponents in the second round being either Finnish pair, Tuuli Harkonen-Elina Niiranen or Russian pair Anastasiia Boiarun-Alena Iakovleva.
