BUKIT JALIL: World N 6 Lee Chong Wei bagged his 12th Malaysia Open crown by overcoming Japan’s Kento Momota 21-17, 23-21 in the men’s singles final at the Axiata Arena here on Sunday.
Chong Wei's victory also ends Momota’s 21-match winning streak.
The Malaysia Open title is Chong Wei's first this season, and it could not have come at a better time ahead of the World Championships in Nanjing (later this month) and the Indonesia Asian Games (in August).
For his efforts, Chong Wei pocketed US$49,000 (RM198,000) while Momota received US$23,800 (RM96,000).
Chong Wei will head to Jakarta next for the Indonesia Open that starts on Tuesday.
He hopes to set another record by winning the Indonesia Open title for a record seventh time.
