Misbun: 'Don't see this as a demotion for Yoke Meng'

BAM youth development director Misbun Sidek believes it is crucial to have experienced coaches at the Under-15 level.

This is because those in the Under-15 group need to build a solid foundation before they can move up the ranks.

Misbun was commenting on his decision to put former Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) head coach, Kwan Yoke Meng in charge of the girls' Under-13 group.

"I hope people don't see this as a demotion for Yoke Meng. I know him, and I know what he is capable of," said Misbun when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

"We need top quality and experienced coaches at the Under-15 level.

"We need to make sure the younger players have a strong foundation before they move up the ranks.

"Once the players are well-equipped, the coaches at the Under-18 level will only need to guide and supervise them."

The former international, who was men's singles head coach previously, admitted that the junior coaching staff will need to be strengthened before next year's World Junior Championships.

Misbun said he will assess the coaches and players when they return to ABM in batches over the next two weeks before proposing his coaching plans.

"The existing training programmes will be retained. If anything, we want to review and improve them.

"Ideally, I would like to add two more coaches to our setup. We have a total of 75 players and 10 coaches right now.

"I will assess the coaches and the players once they return to national training before making any decisions," the 60-year-old added.
