Peng Soon's wife doubles up as father

While many celebrated Father's Day this year at home, mixed doubles player Chan Peng Soon and a few others could only reconnect with their loved ones through their mobile devices.

Like the rest of the Olympic-bound shuttlers, Peng Soon and his partner, Goh Liu Ying have been training under a quarantine bubble at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) since the implementation of MCO 3.0 earlier this month.

"It's not easy to be separated from your family for such a long time, but this is a sacrifice we have to make for our country.

"Firstly, I'd like to thank my wife, May May, for being so understanding. In my absence, she's been running everything by herself at home. For that, I'm forever grateful.

"For Father's Day this year, a special mention goes out to my wife for doubling up as the mother and father to our kids at home," said Peng Soon, who has four children, Milton, Hannah, Julian and Leah.

Despite the temporary separation, Peng Soon, 33, said his family continue to give him strength and motivation to go on.

"I call home everyday. With technology, we can still see each other and communicate without being physically present.

"My family is one of my biggest sources of motivation."

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who reached the final of the 2016 Rio Olympics, are currently in their last stretch of preparation for the Tokyo Games.

"Training at the ABM has been great. We are not distracted, and everybody is focused. We are grateful to BAM for bringing us all together to train under one roof," he said.
