Rookie Aidil itching for Thomas Cup action

Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin is raring for action in the Thomas Cup which starts on Saturday in Aarhus, Denmark.

Having made the squad for the 2019 Sea Games and the recent Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland, Aidil, 21, has yet to take to court in a competitive team tie.

Malaysia, who last won the Thomas Cup in 1992, will open their campaign in Group D on Sunday against Canada.

"I really hope I get to play in the Thomas Cup. Of course the final decision lies with the coaches, but I am ready for the challenge," said the world No 122 Aidil, who is the lowest ranked shuttler in the team behind world No 8 Lee Zii Jia, Cheam June Wei (No 70), Ng Tze Yong (No 82) and Leong Jun Hao (No 121).

Aidil agreed that he would have stood a better chance of playing a tie had England not withdrawn from the competition.

Earlier, BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann said he was ready to give every player a chance to play, but England's last minute withdrawal has thrown a spanner in the works for the top teams who wanted to give their younger players playing opportunities.

Aidil, however, said he remains optimistic that he will get to play when the time is right.
