Smashing into history

No Malaysian shuttler has ever qualified for two badminton events in a single Olympic edition.

Doubles specialist Ong Yew Sin will attempt to achieve it for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 27-year-old expresses his desire to qualify for both the men's doubles (with Teo Ee Yi) and mixed doubles (with Goh Liu Ying) for the Paris Games. For the record, the three are independent shuttlers.

Yew Sin, whose partnership with Ee Yi has grown to strength after they were dropped from the national team, relishes the challenge of featuring in two Olympic events after joining forces with veteran Goh Liu Ying recently.

Yew Sin-Liu Ying's combination will be put to the test when they head to Europe next week.

They will make their debut at the German Open on March 8-13, followed by the All England on March 16-20.

The main challenge faced by Yew Sin-Liu Ying will be to place themselves high enough in the world ranking prior to the start of the Paris Olympic qualifying period, which will likely begin in May next year.

But they have every reason to be upbeat after having their contract with Li-Ning Malaysia extended for another two years.

Li-Ning will also continue to back Ee Yi and the trios' coach Chin Eei Hui until 2024.

"If I can perform and achieve good results in men's doubles and mixed doubles, I can start dreaming of earning two Olympic tickets for Paris," said Yew Sin.

"However, my partnership with Liu Ying is still new, and we have yet to pair up for an event. My main focus will still be the men's doubles with Ee Yi."

For Liu Ying, the new sponsorship extension has reignited her hopes of making a fourth Olympic appearance.

Fans first thought that the 32-year-old would retire after parting ways with partner Chan Peng Soon, with whom she captured the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Peng Soon, 33, has since returned to the national team after 13 years with Liu Ying.

Liu Ying has already achieved several firsts at the Olympics, and she is determined to go for more.

If she qualifies for the Paris Games, she will be the first Malaysian woman shuttler to feature in four Olympics, also equalling Lee Chong Wei's record for men.

Winning the mixed doubles silver with Peng Soon also made her the nation's first female medallist in badminton.

"It is my dream, and I will try my best to qualify for Paris Olympics. But it will all depend on my condition in the future," said Liu Ying, who debuted at the 2012 London edition.

"I am grateful to Li-Ning for supporting my professional career."
