KUALA LUMPUR: Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Ng Tze Yong got his World Championships debut to a flying start when he reached the second round today.
The 22-year-old Malaysian, a last-minute inclusion for the meet following a withdrawal, needed only 40 minutes to upset last month's Malaysia Masters champion, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia, 21-16, 21-10 in the first round.
Speaking to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in his post-match interview, the Johor-born said: "Firstly I think I'm very lucky to be here in Tokyo, so I want to try and make the best of the opportunity.
"The Commonwealth Games is now in the past, the World Championships is a fresh start for me.
"I also don't want to pressure myself by thinking too much (about my stronger opponents), but rather work hard for every point."
Tze Yong will take on Thailand's Thammasin Sitthikom in the next round at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Also in the top half of the draw is world No 1 and reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
