KUALA LUMPUR: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have smashed their way into the history books by becoming the first ever Malaysians to be crowned world champions in badminton.
The world's No 6 claimed a sensational 21-19, 21-14 win over Indonesia's world No 3 Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan in the final of the World Championships at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on today.
In a closely contested final, three-time world champions Ahsan-Hendra looked to have gained the upper hand when they led 19-16 in the opening game.
But Aaron-Wooi Yik, who had beaten the Indonesians to claim bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year, reeled off five straight points to snatch the first game.
And that gave them the confidence as they stepped up the intensity to seal the win in 40 minutes before dropping to their knees in joy.
