Minion Kevin and coach at arm's length as relationship turns sour

KUALA LUMPUR: If sliding down the world ranking is not bad enough, it is learnt that trouble is brewing between Indonesian top men's doubles duo Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and their coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi.

Indonesian media, today, reported that Kevin had a fallout with the 60-year-old legendary doubles coach, fondly known as Herry IP, and is currently training separately on his own.

Earlier, rumours had it that the relationship between the two had gone sour, following Herry's criticism of Kevin's performance at the Indonesia Open in June.

Social media was also abuzz when Marcus-Kevin, who have not won a major title, lost their World No 1 spot after five years earlier this month to Japan's former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi.

The Indonesians, known as the Minions, are expected to drop down further to No 3 when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) updates their rankings tomorrow.

Indonesian news agency Jawa Pos quoted a source as saying: "Herry was still on good terms with Marcus even after the Japan Open. However, things are not looking good for him and Kevin.

"Kevin does not want to train under Herry. Herry has also shut the door for him."

When contacted for comments, Herry said: "I have no comments, let time decide.

"I have no issues with him (Kevin), but if he has issues with me, that is not my problem. If you want to know more, you can ask Aryono Miranat (assistant doubles coach)."

The BA of Indonesia (PBSI), in a statement, said that Herry is still the men's doubles chief coach and that Kevin is still under his care.

The national body have also urged the general public not to jump to conclusions and allow matters to be resolved professionally.
