Netizens smash Indonesian badminton coach's 'black, white' remark

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian coach Eng Hian, 45, continues to draw flak from Malaysians despite apologising for making a racist remark about a Malaysian badminton doubles pair.

Eng Hian was caught on camera referring to Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah as "putih" (white) and "hitam" (black) when he giving instructions to Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi during a break.

Although some Netizens were forgiving, others were still riled up about it.

Commenting on the story on the NST Online Facebook page, they said the coach's statement reflected a lack of morals.

Nadge Ariffin said: "Imagine if Eng Hian was Malaysian and not from the other side. They would have been screaming for blood."

Nobin K. Chadury said: "Even with an apology… to me, that is an insult. May our players rise up and take them on in the future."

Joan Dorai said: "Apologising after the damage is done seems to be the trend of insensitive people."

Kisho Lo said: "We should not be referring to people by their colour (of their skin)."

Yeow Nong Cheam said: "Apology is one thing. What if it had not been caught on camera? Will you apologise?"

Sashi Kumar said: "If our coach had said anything to insult Indonesian players, by now, there would have been a protest at our embassy.

"Here, our reaction is soft. Even the ministry is quiet."

Asokan Karupaya said racism had noplace in sports. "He should be sacked by the Indonesian team."

Jae Dee said: "That is a racist remark. Your 'apology' is fake."
