BAM will be selective in taking back their former players

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) remains open to the idea of having former national shuttlers back in their setup. However, these players must first meet certain standards.

This includes actively playing on the BWF international circuit, have a regimented training schedule and good physical condition.

Despite seemingly short of quality players in some disciplines, the national body will not compromise on their "quality control".

"It's a case by case matter, we're always open to discussion if a former player wants to come back." said BAM singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann.

"However, there are a few things we need to look into. Why do these players want to come back? If they were dropped in the past, they will need to show good consistent results since then.

"Are they training regularly? This is important, because BAM's training programme is regimented.

"Very importantly, these players need to be playing actively. We can't simply bring back in players who are no longer playing competitively on the circuit."

In light of several resignations recently, the national women's singles and mixed doubles departments look to be affected the most.

So much so, that only one national pair made the semi-finals of the Malaysia International Series on Friday, making it BAM's worst-ever performance in the tournament since its inception in 2017.

Among the women's singles and mixed doubles players currently plying their trade outside the national setup are two-time world junior champion Goh Jin Wei, Soniia Cheah, Ho Yen Mei (women's singles), and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai.
