Wei Chong-Kai Wun a step from retaining their Taiwan crown

TAIPEI CITY: National men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are set to defend their Taiwan Open title after reaching the final today.

In the semi-final, the world No 23 played superbly, clawing back from a game down to upset top seeds and fellow compatriots, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, 17-21, 21-19, 21-9.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun, who have struggled with injury woes at the start of the season, will play homesters and second seeds, Lu Ching Yao-Yang Po Han, in the final tomorrow.

Ching Yao-Po Han had earlier defeated their national teammates, Lin Chia Yu-Lin Yong Shen 21-16, 21-16 in the semi-finals.

For Wei Chong-Kai Wun, this will be their second World Tour final this year, after the Malaysia Masters in May.

"Firstly, I want to congratulate Wei Chong-Kai Wun for successfully reaching their second straight Taiwan Open final.

"It was a pity that they had to defeat another Malaysian pair, but sometimes you have to take that opportunity.

"The boys have struggled with injuries at the start of the year but played exceptionally well at the Malaysia Masters last month. That kick-started their good form and boosted their confidence.

"I wish for them to play their best tomorrow, don't think too much, fight hard point for point," said Academy Badminton Malaysia doubles coaching director, Rexy Mainaky.

Earlier in the day, national mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei also marched into the final after downing Taiwan's Ye Hong Wei-Lee Chia Hsin 21-14, 21-19.

They will play another Taiwanese duo, Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Lin Xiao Min in the final today.
