Hang Yee-Eng Cheong win Mongolia IC for third title of the season

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong landed their third title this season, when they came out tops at the Mongolia International Challenge today.

The independent men's doubles duo, who are expected to break into the world top 60 this week, defeated the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) Chia Weijie-Liew Xun 21-17, 21-15 in the final.

For the impressive Hang Yee-Eng Cheong, it was their fifth final on the trot since the Slovenia Open in May.

World No. 70 Hang Yee-Eng Cheong won back-to-back titles at the Slovenia Open and Austrian Open before settling for second place at the Maldives and China International Challenges last month.

"Hang Yee-Eng Cheong have come a long way since joining the professional players' group early this year. It has not been an easy journey, but I hope they can see that it is worth it now," said Rosman Razak, who coaches the independent men's doubles pairs outside the national setup.

"Eng Cheong is 24, while Hang Yee is 26, and they are not exactly a young pair. So to come out from BAM, start from scratch and win tournaments consistently is no easy feat.

"Their next challenge is to hopefully start playing in higher tier tournaments with their more established seniors. To do that they need to improve on their rankings, and that is why they are playing in all these tournaments."

The title in Ulaanbaatar comes as a huge boost for the Hang Yee-Eng Cheong, who heads back to Kuala Lumpur this week for the National Championships at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.

The national meet, which starts on Tuesday, is making its comeback after a four-year hiatus.
