KUALA LUMPUR: Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky wants to see Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow reaching for the stars.
On Sunday, the national mixed doubles duo showed great fighting spirit when they clawed back from a game down to win the Super 100 Indonesia Masters title in Medan. The reigning national champions saw off Japan's Hiroki Nishi-Akari Sato 13-21, 21-14, 21-14 in the final.
Congratulating Roy King-Valeree on their maiden international title, Rexy told Timesport that this victory is just the beginning, marking a small step towards even greater success.
"Roy King-Valeree must not be satisfied. They still have a long way to go and must stay hungry.
"What is it that they truly want?
"To be a top athlete, you can never give up. Your career is only as good as how much you want it to be," said Rexy.
The Indonesian urged Roy King-Valeree to follow in the footsteps of their more established national teammates Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Teoh Mei Xing.
"I hope to see Roy King-Valeree catching up with their seniors.
"Winning this international title should give them that motivation and confidence," added Rexy.
In July, Roy King won two titles at the National Championships: one in mixed doubles with Valeree and another in men's doubles with Wan Arif Wan Junaidi.
In Medan, Roy King-Arif lost in the semi-finals.
