Yew Sin-Ee Yi ready to lend experience if called up for Thomas Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men's doubles duo Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi have made themselves available for next month's Thomas Cup in Chengdu, China, if the BA of Malaysia (BAM) needs their services.

After missing out on qualifying for the Paris Olympics in July, Yew Sin-Ee Yi are ready to lend their experience to help Malaysia, which have not won the title since 1992.

Their coach, Rosman Razak, said: "Yes, Yew Sin-Ee Yi are ready to play for Malaysia in the Thomas Cup.

"Since they did not qualify for the Olympics, we have decided to pull them out of the remaining European tournaments (Swiss Open and Spain Masters). They can return to Malaysia and prepare for other tournaments like the Thomas Cup.

"Should they earn a call-up, Yew Sin-Ee Yi are ready to play as an original pair or be scratched. What's more important is helping Malaysia win a point.

"However, the final decision lies with BAM.

"What we can do is focus on our preparation and be ready if called up."

Up until September last year, Yew Sin-Ee Yi were in a prime position to join former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and qualify for the Paris Olympics.

However, a nagging knee injury sustained by Ee Yi put paid to the pair's Olympic dreams, as they could not regain their best form.

Despite the setback, Yew Sin-Ee Yi could still be valuable to Malaysia's Thomas Cup squad because of their experience.

In the previous edition, Yew Sin-Ee Yi played a crucial role in helping Malaysia qualify for the quarter-finals as group winners.

Unfortunately, the team lost 3-2 in the last eight to eventual champions India.

This year, Malaysia are in Group D with European champions Denmark, Hong Kong and Algeria.
