KUALA LUMPUR: Independent mixed doubles pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien and national men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh pulled off upsets to progress to the quarter-finals of the Kaohsiung Masters today.
In their second-round clash, Tien Ci-Chiew Sien squared off against home pair and the tournament's fourth seeds, Wu Hsuan Yi-Yang Chu Yun, at the K-Arena in Taiwan.
They triumphed 21-16, 22-20 in 34 minutes over Hsuan Yi-Chu Yun to book a quarter-final meeting against another Taiwanese pair Cheng Kai Wen-Liu Chiao Yun tomorrow.
World No. 143 Justin faced off against tournament fifth seed Chi Yu Jen and blew the home favourite away 21-17, 21-7 in 33 minutes.
Justin will face Taiwan's fourth seed Lee Chia Hao in the quarter-finals.
Chia Hao defeated Malaysia's Ong Zhen Yi 21-18, 21-17 to book his place in the quarter-finals.
Cheam June Wei, who won the Lin Dan Cup last weekend, will join Justin in the last eight after defeating Singapore's Joel Koh 21-18, 21-16 in 44 minutes.
June Wei will face Lokesh Reddy Kalagotla from India next.
In an all-Malaysian clash in the men's doubles, Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong triumphed over Boon Xin Yuan-Goh V Shem 21-19, 21-10.
Hang Yee-Eng Cheong will face qualifiers He Zhi Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan in the quarter-finals.
Compatriots Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong will join them after dispatching Hung Kuei Chun-Lui Chun Wai of Hong Kong.
